In Rainbows

Radiohead have made a record. It is available here for pre-order.

We are deep amid the boxes. We dream of the sound of packing tape, and it frightens us.

Bittersweet and a Lizardy Treat

It is essentially impossible to believe that the caption of the photo to the right is true, but I'll leave that for you to judge.

Our apartment is completely destroyed right now. Boxes are everywhere in various states of packed-ness. Every night this week we have been out to dinner at friends' houses and the evenings have been bittersweet. It has been amazing to have another chance to hang out with these awesome people, but sad to know it could be the last time we get to do it before driving away.

There will be more dinner parties, but not here, not this way, not anymore.

Protest

What the Buddhist monks are doing in Burma is quite amazing. So far the military regime is holding its hand, but that could change at any time.

And in regard to the President of Iran's speech today at Columbia, I have to say, I agree with this sign.

We had dinner with our friends tonight and their roof overlooks downtown SF and Twin Peaks behind it. The Bay Bridge was off to our right, and the air was still and warm. It's tough to leave SF, but the full boxes and empty walls prove that it is going to happen. There is no point in denying it.

The Beastie Boys Rule

There's no point in paraphrasing the email I just got, so I'm just going to post it, in its entirety.

dear patrons of the arts,

we are planning to document the last 2 gala event shows of this tour. but we are also interested in your experience of getting ready for the shows to get another perspective on the events.

so if you have tickets for either the detroit (sept 25th) or chicago (sept 26th) gala event shows, and you own a video camera, please begin to document your preparations for the show.

if you are shopping for an outfit, or picking one out from your closet, ge
tting mentally and physically prepared for the show, doing your squat thrusts or drinking margaritas... whatever it is that you do in the days, hours, minutes, leading up to the show, please document it. you can also bring your camera to the show to record your arrival, hanging out at the show, leaving, driving home..... of course we are not looking to to make AIFST! But you are welcome to use your camera to document your experience at the show.

and then send us the footage, and we will try to include it in our film of the show.

if you want to register to be a part of this, please email us at this address - galaevent2007@yahoo.com - and put "GALA EVENT 2007" in the subject line.

as always, thank you for your patronage, and we'll see you on the ice.

beatsie boys
Yep, they're that fucking cool.

Fly Lu Fly

So mad! Somehow or another the post I posted last night never made it to the web, and then I shut down before I realized it. So this here is a recreation of last night's post, sans eloquence.

Acroyoga to the left. Scott snapped that image while we were up Tomales Bay State Park at the Heart's Desire picnic area. 100 oysters disappeared into our bellies that day.

And if food is your thing, the site Foodwishes will kick your meals up a notch.
Last year at this time were in Bangkok, just returning from a day out in the city, only to discover tanks were rolling and a coup was taking place. Still, it sounds like we were having fun.
Quite pleased it's Friday today. MMWS at the Fillmore, and it very well could be our last show there before we move back.

Fun With Animals

Pics are up from our trip up the coast, and they look great. Lu took some amazing shots. She keeps saying that the landscape is so amazing that you just can't take a bad one, but I think it's more than that. She's got a great eye. Really looking forward to seeing the images from Scott and Laura, too, but they're still on the road, heading north.

Here's some lolcats + postsecret silliness. Or you could also enjoy the bravest rabbit in all of Rabbitown.

And this here is a great post from Wired about the "Don't Tase Me, Bro" meme now propagating through ether. It's amazing how fast something like this becomes a cultural touchstone these days. Wish I was smart enough to grab a website. Gonna have to keep an eye on that for next time.

Magic Bat

Alright, this is just crazy. Did anyone see this on live tv? I really don't know if I believe it!

Quick Post!

It's been days since I've been on here, but that's all because I've been having fun in the real world!

Camped on bluffs above the Pacific Ocean with no one else around. Drove the coast north with mile after mile of breath-taking beauty. Lu will have pictures uploaded soon, and I'll post them right away.

I do want to say goodbye to Robert Jordan, though. I have been reading the Wheel of Time since 1990 when the first book was published, and I have been eagerly awaiting the twelfth and final book which was due out sometime in '08. Jordan has been sick for a while, though, so this doesn't come as a surprise. But I am very sad to lose an amazing writer and it is distressing that he was not able to finish this epic tale. He did tell the ending to the people who were helping him, and I do hope that someday we get to hear how it all ends.

"Duty is heavier than a mountain, death lighter than a feather." Goodbye RJ and thank you for all the amazing words.

Redwoods and Salty Air

Packed up for camping and it feels good. We're heading south to SLO for Thursday night, and then back north a bit to Big Sur for Friday. Scott and Laura are driving up the coast to Washington, and we're joining them for a few nights under the big trees and out on a bluff overlooking the Pacific.

There is something truly special about this California coastal land. The quality of light as the sun sets into the Pacific is utterly unique. It has a golden burnished glow that I have not seen anywhere else.

It will be nice to camp in the Northeastern woods of America once we move back, but I'll never forget what it's like to wake up with the ocean at my feet, and the redwoods towering above.

You Be Good

Tonight's post is easy because I read the NYTimes thoroughly today.

RIP to Alex, an amazing Gray parrot. This animal transformed the way scientists think about the brains of birds. The 2nd to last paragraph of this article is the real heartbreaker.

Then check out an article about the future of computer memory. Sounds dry, but the guy behind this new development is the person that created the memory foundation for the 160gig iPod and tetrabytes of storage in every home. The article says with this new development you could carry in your pocket the contents of a college library. That's shitloads of info!

And the last bit out of the NYTimes that really struck me was just a tiny blurb about one of the rovers on Mars. It was supposed to last a few months, but now years later this thing is still rocking. Not even a 2 month, planet encompassing dust-storm could stop Opportunity. And the next step is into the history of our nearest red planet.

It is also the wedding anniversary of my good friends Chris and Andrea, as well as my dad-in-law's bday today, so Happy Birthday and Anniversary to them.

It's also the unhappy anni-v of 9/11, but that's not something I really like to dwell on. One thing I do think it is important to remember, though, is that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, and don't let the liars tell you different.

Not For Profit

I have been thoroughly enjoying a live Radiohead concert from 03, so tonight I went searching for more. I found this page of recent goodness, and I hope you enjoy it, too.

Also take a look at the Sound Bed. You won't get much sleep on it, but maybe you can make beautiful music.

Tonight the packing process truly begins. Removing old clothes from closet depths is the first step for an approaching move. Tonight I take that step.

GGB Peak-a-Boo!

Lu took this picture on a recent hike, and I just had to put it up. So awesome!

Friday Bacon and Other Fun

Friday. Finally. Even though it was a short week, it felt, well actually it felt like a short week, and I'm okay with that.

For today I can only serve diversions. My non-stop coverage of the Burn last week meant that I just couldn't post last night. I couldn't even write haikus! But tonight I see success on both fronts.

So for Friday diversions, first check out Sproing! It's a game, it's completely worksafe (despite the name) and it's oddly compelling.

Next is bacon. A bacon costume, to be more precise. Actually, a story about how wonderful it was to BE bacon, and how to make your own costume. It's not even October and I now have Halloween locked up. Beautiful. I can't wait to be bacon!

Last bit is for all the William Gibson fans out there. This right here is your lunch reading. It's a great interview with the Washington Post. Here's a quote:
"Every hair is being numbered -- eBay has every grain of sand. EBay is serving this very, very powerful function which nobody ever intended for it. EBay in the hands of humanity is sorting every last Dick Tracy wrist radio cereal premium sticker that ever existed. It's like some sort of vast unconscious curatorial movement."
And if you're not a Gibson fan, well, check out the article, and maybe you'll give his books a try. They are definitely worth your time.

Moving's Uncertainty Paradox

cats in loose boxes
their futures neither here nor
there
, like ours, elsewhere

Now that the Burn is behind me, the spectre of "Moving" is truly beginning to loom. Everything I look at in this apartment is starting to fall on one side or the other: Box It or Begone.

Most things fall in the latter category. (ha!)

Now I just gotta get through the rest of today's NYTimes so that I can add it to the box-packing pile.

Afterburn

Friends are home safe from the playa, and that makes me very happy.

It was amazing to watch the Burn, and the Crude Awakening on Saturday night.

Yesterday we hung out with a park-full of hippies in GGP. Here's a little note to all the people writing about Burning Man. The people that go there aren't hippies. They're something, but they're not hippies. All the hippies left in the world were in Speedway Meadows yesterday to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love. And they couldn't have done that if they were at Burning Man. Which they weren't.

Here's a great write-up of the Homo Ouroboros project. Sounds like it was a bit hit, and a bit of a challenge to create. I can't wait to hear a full report from my buddy who was actually a part of the camp that constructed that art piece. Other friends built and brought a pyramid, and I hope the pyramid power was in full effect. I'm sure it was.

I still can't believe we didn't go. Watching dusty cars park and unload on the street in front of our house was a visceral experience. They had been there. We had not. And we've got to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Live Burn Feed

Found a window into the playa. BRC radio, ranger walkie-talkie chatter, and best of all, a live shot of The Man, and of Crude Awakening.

The Man goes in about an hour and 46 minutes. So happy I'll get to see it go down.

Heave Ho

Catapult + flaming piano = this. Wow.

Lots of other great clips there, too. Check'em out.
